Bethlehem, PA • The Christmas City

This is the town where I spend each day. I'm lucky to live here and my studio, located in the Banana Factory, is just a walk over the bridge.

Named 'Bethlehem' on Christmas Eve, 1741, by the Moravian settlers who founded the community, Bethlehem is known as "Christmas City USA" for its annual transformation into a Yuletide wonderland. But with its historical tours, shopping, and fine dining, this sophisticated and picturesque town is a terrific place to visit at any time of the year.

Home to Lehigh University, Moravian College, Musikfest, the Celtic Classic Highland Games and Christkindlmarkt, Bethlehem celebrates the present as much as it reflects on the past.

Stop in for a bite to eat and a hand crafted beer at the Bethlehem Brew Works.

Enjoy a romantic carriage ride throughout historic Bethlehem.

Bethlehem is a city of "firsts" and "oldests:" the first trombone choir, the oldest continually running bookshop, the oldest 'Bach Choir' in America and the first Christmas tree. In fact, every first Friday of the month, South Bethlehem shops stay open late, offering free food or samples to customers.

The Banana Factory

I've been a resident artist with the Banana Factory since May 15th, 1999. Recently, I relocated into a beautiful spacious studio with large windows.

Why not stop by for our First Friday celebration taking place on November 2nd, 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Enjoy complimentary beverages and hors d'oeuvres and visit the 28 artists' studios. We'd love to see you and welcome you into our world.

No Parking • Monopoly

No Parking

It was great to paint in my studio today. The sky was clear, the wind was whipping, the candles were aromatic .... and I was playing 'Charlie Brown's Christmas' on the stereo. I know, I know ... it's a bit on the early side for Christmas Carols ... but there's something 'all seasonal' and timeless about Vince Guaraldi's music. The clear and happy piano music accompanied by the upright bass and brushes on the drums make for an uplifting day. And you can't help but see the Peanuts gang breaking out in dance.

Parcheesi

Parcheesi • this painting is sold

Each year our parents would treat us - five kids - to a board game at Christmas. One of my favorites was - and still is - Parcheesi. When my Mother was in Phoebe Ministries, there were two women who, each day, would play game after game of Parcheesi.

Several months ago I received a commission from a gentleman who played Parcheesi with Katherine Hepburn. He claimed that it was her favorite game. I have no doubt.

I've given away several Parcheesi games at Christmastime. Of course they have to be the versions with the taller wooden game pieces (as opposed to the diskettes). And, just recently I saw a dilapidated Parcheesi box on top of a garbage bag in the dumpster .... I carefully removed it and opened the lid to find that all of the pieces were still enclosed in the plastic bag. The game board had never even been opened !!! My lucky day !

So, if you're indecisive about what to give your kids for Christmas - or any occasion for that matter - why not consider bidding on Ebay for a vintage Parcheesi game. You'll have years and years of fun and a lifetime of good memories with your family and friends.

Martini

Martini • this painting is sold

Well, today was a mixed bag. I was under the dental needles, then teeth scaling for over an hour. To tell you the truth, I don't really mind it. My mind kept wandering to my Dad's new kitty, 'Gretel'. She's soooo affectionate and loving. It makes me wish that I, too, could adopt a sweet little feline from the shelter.

I spent the rest of the day in my studio. It was dreary and damp outside, but all of my twinkly lights warmed my space .... and the glow from the candles made for a very inviting scene indeed.

After I finished the martini painting, I nestled down on my velvet chaise lounge and read a few chapters from 'All Creatures Great and Small'. It truly must be one of the greatest books ever written. I love it. I've reread it many times after the freshness of the stories has faded ... and it's a real treat to go back and enjoy them all over again. The problem is that I'm about a chapter or two away from the end. Soon I'll have to pull 'All Things Bright and Beautiful' from the shelf, dust it off, and once again, cozy up on my chaise lounge for a wonderful and enjoyable read.

Martini: optional.

Corkscrew

Corkscrew

Cruising on the Hudson River

Old Kingston Lighthouse from 1838

Sailing on the Hudson River

Last year I was the high bidder on four tickets for the Rip Van Winkle Hudson River two hour cruise. Well, the forecast for Sunday was SOOO incredible that we decided it would be then that we four would take our trip. In addition to myself was my Father, my sister Karen and my brother-in-law Boby. I was very prepared. I mapquested the directions in both map form and type form. It would take 2 hours and 47 minutes to make the journey.

I will say this in my defense - I did mention that it seemed odd that when we finally arrived in Kingston three hours later, that the directions on the map took us 9 miles inland. We drove through the deep country passing small farm stands, tractors, and oddly no signs at all for a boat ... After what seemed to be about 30 minutes, we arrived at a dead end .... and the only thing in site other than farmland was a boy mowing a lawn. He didn't know about any Rip Van Winkle ship and certainly one was not docked in the nearby cornfield. So we retraced out steps .... I was truly dying. When Boby checked the brochure that I had in my hand, he noticed that I mapquested the Rip Van Winkle MAILING address NOT the directions to the boat.

We hit just about every traffic light. When we arrived at the correct destination, with only seconds to spare, I jumped out of the car, ran to the window to exchange my four vouchers for tickets. The girl slid the glass window open and said 'I'm sorry but we're all sold out'. Nooooooo !!!!! I explained that we drove three hours from Allentown, Pa and brought my Father along and I just COULDN'T disappoint him!! I told her that I did call for reservations, but the woman in charge said that I wouldn't need them. Well, 75 degrees and not a cloud in the sky with peak fall foliage and every person in a 50 mile radius wanted to be on the Rip Van Winkle two hour cruise.

Kindly, after seeing the desperation in my face, she passed over four tickets. We were the last to board and off we went. If you're ever in the Kingston, NY area, it's a really pleasurable experience to relax and cruise on the Rip Van Winkle. They serve a micro beer - Old Capitol - brewed right there in Kingston. They also have cold wine on draft (?), a couple of 'standard' beers on draft and mixed drinks to boot.

They also have a grill and serve hot and cold sandwiches. It's a real treat for sure. The captain narrates the whole cruise, pointing out who lived in the opulent mansions dotting the hillsides. The Vanderbilts, the Roosevelts, the Mills' mansion and the Wilderstein mansion - home to Daisy Suckley, whose letters, found in a suitcase under her bed, revealed an intimate 'friendship' with Franklin Roosevelt.

So, if you go, give yourself plenty of time, don't mapquest the mailing address ... and even though the woman on the other end of the phone tells you that reservations aren't necessary, make them anyway. Bon Voyage!!

Oh, and needless to say, Boby has informed me that he is never NEVER going to let me live this one down. I should've pushed him overboard when I had the chance.

Solnce - Salt

Solnce • this painting is sold

Ahhh .. salt. You can smell it when the clear river water turns to aromatic brackish. You can taste it sprinkled amongst the pepper on your grilled Salmon, you can enjoy it cascading into the depths of your icy cold Margarita !!!

Salt.

Sea Salt and cooking - or cocktails ... nothin' better.

Piran Salt, this precious product of the Sečovelje Salina Nature Park, is the result of restless finds, warm sun, and the hardworking salt-pan workers. It is made manually, according to traditional methods dating back more than 700 years. The key process involves natural crystalisation in the Park's saltfields that are protected by petola – a valuable biosediment substrate made up of minerals and microorganisms. The salt with its designation of origin is light, rich in sea minerals, and has an exquisite taste, supplemented by the parent water caught within the crystals.

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Ship

Charles W. Morgan Whaling Ship

Well, although this painting is not technically in my 'Painting Each Day' series, I did paint it in one day. The piece is an acrylic painting on panel and measures approx. 38" x 38" plus a 7" frame.

When I was in scouting, I stayed on the Charles W. Morgan whaleship ... we climbed the rigging, slept in narrow bunks, and sailed two person Dinghies around the harbour.

As the last surviving American wooden whaleship, and the oldest American merchant ship afloat, the Charles W. Morgan is unique today. When she was launched in 1841. the Morgan was one of more than 600 American whaleships that hunted whales to supply the worlds need for oil for lubrication and illumination. Named for her original owner, whaling merchant Charles W. Morgan of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the vessel made 37 voyages during an 80 year career.

After her retirement in 1921, the Morgan was preserved as an exhibit near new Bedford before coming to Mystic Seaport in 1941. She was named a National Historic Landmark in 1967 and since 1973 has been exhibited afloat here, restored to look much as she did around 1905.

This painting, complete with frame, is priced at $3000.00

Tootsie Rolls

Tootsie Rolls • this painting is sold

When a product reaches an age advanced enough to be known as a "national institution," it usually bears little resemblance to its original form - however, this is not the case with Tootsie Roll.

The round piece of chewy, chocolatey candy that delights Americans today still looks and tastes amazingly like the first Tootsie Roll, made over 109 years ago.

Even more astonishing, the candy roll still sells for one penny, the original price, even though the company now offers candy packages priced up to $7.17. The first penny candy to be individually wrapped in paper, Tootsie Rolls are so protected today - but the modern design of the wrapper signals that changes have occurred in the product's long and successful story.

Tootsie Roll Industries today is one of the country's largest candy companies, headquartered in Chicago with operations in Massachusetts, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Mexico and Toronto. Total net sales in fiscal 2004 were over Four Hundred Twenty One Million dollars.

In its 109th year, the company produces more than sixty million Tootsie Rolls per day.

Brer Rabbit (finished)

I had a lovely day in the studio and finished this Brer Rabbit painting that I didn't have time to complete yesterday. Brer Rabbit

Brer Rabbit

Well, this painting isn't exactly finished .... I went to my Dad's early this morning and he was STILL sleeping in bed and right next to him was his new kitty ... whatever her name is ... and I exclaimed 'Everybody OUT of BED this MINUTE !!!' and kitty looked up at me, stretched and placed her little paw across my Dad's shoulder and went back to sleep. So much for assertive behavior.

Tonight my Dad decided on a name ... 'Gretel'. She's black and caramel in color with a little white under her nose and chin AND she's the Sweetest little kitty ever. I'm so happy for my Dad ...

Then I was working - which also involved partying - with my friends Sharon and Dave .... so, accept my apologies .... but today I was slower than Brer Rabbit Molasses ....

Sweets

Sweets

Well today I found the sweetest cat ever!! My sister Karen and I stopped at the local Animal Shelter JUST to take a look -- at the dogs. We're thinking that maybe our Father would like a little buddy to keep him company ... perhaps a little Dachshund .... but then I saw this gorgeous rich colored deep dark chocolate fur with reddish gold highlights, dark eyeliner framing gold-green clear eyes ... and white under her nose and chin. She's beautiful ... and the sweetest little girl you'd ever want to meet. She didn't get off of our laps for an hour ... wanting just to be pet on her back and her belly.

Tomorrow we're taking our Father to meet her ... and maybe, just maybe he'll be taking home a lovely little new friend to keep him company. They'd be good for each other .... two sweethearts ...

The Salmon Fishing Fly III

The Salmon Fishing Fly III • this painting is sold

I'll tell ya, I had fun painting this beautiful little piece of art. The balance of delicate and strong - of feather and metal. With rich colour, yet fragile matter.

I believe that I need to rent 'A River Runs Through It' .... The novel is noted for using detailed descriptions of fly fishing and nature to engage with a number of profound metaphysical questions, and is recognized as an American classic.

Maybe tomorrow night I'll have a date with myself ... grilled Salmon, a glass of Cabernet and Brad Pitt ... nothin' better for sure ...

My New Studio

Well, here's my new incredible studio !!!

I just moved in from down the hall. In May of 1999, I was accepted as an artist into the wonderful Banana Factory. The Banana Factory is located in Bethlehem, PA. My studio was 239.99 square feet and within one year I knew that I had outgrown the space .... BUT, it was charming and romantic and I had many, many wonderful moments painting and entertaining there - especially on our celebrated First Fridays.

After my Mother passed away in July of this year, I came back to the Banana Factory, opened my studio door and thought ... 'no' ... I cannot paint in this overcrowded, chaotic studio with no windows. I heard that a studio opened ... large, with two massive windows facing north. I'm taking the plunge .... financially it's a bit more daunting ... BUT, it's beautiful ... I can breathe ... and it's in my own corner where I find peace and a new fresh identity.

If you're in the Banana Factory area, please stop in ... I'd love to share my new space with You!

Here's the hallway leading to my open door ... notice the many Painting Each Day paintings on the right-hand wall.

This is my 'Print' gallery where I'm displaying the many prints that I have designed .... including the Musikfest 20th Anniversary poster, Mayfair 20th Anniversary poster, CigarFest 1st and 2nd annual posters, Wegman's Wine and Dine posters, the Hudson Valley Wine and Food Festival poster, the WARHOL poster for the Allentown Art Museum 'Warhol' exhibit ... and my Adult Beverage prints. It's a fun hallway -- and, if you're looking for a poster for your next event, why not contact me so we can discuss!!!

The Adult Beverage prints and wine event prints.

My beautiful studio -- notice the large windows !!!

My Southern wall -- the 'Music Series' and 'Sea Creatures from the Venetian Fish Market'.

Looking West, my wonderful drafting desk and the outer red wall with my framed prints.

The RED wall !!

My Mom would love this studio .... I can hear her saying 'I wonder how the poor people live!' ... and I would say 'Mom - I'm telling you how the poor people live!!' (meaning me, of course).

Salmon Fly

Salmon Fly * this painting is sold

What can I say about the art of wrapping a Fly?

It's beautiful, it's functional, it puts a wonderful Fish on the table. ... and any Fly Fisherman could enlighten you on the beauty of the adventure ...

I painted this lovely instrument and then closed my door, listened to 'The Red Violin" soundtrack, missed my Mother, cried for a bit, and came home ...

All I can say is if you still have your folks ... call them (!), stop by, make small talk or heavy talk, let them know that you love them ... and if you don't have them ... do right by them ... miss them and do the best that you can ... in honor of your Mom and your Dad.

The Fly

The Fly • this painting is sold

The Way of a Trout With a Fly
G.E.M. Skues • 1921

Oh, thrilling the rise at the lure that is dry,
When the slow trout comes up to the slaughter,
Yet rather would I
Have the turn at my fly,
The cunning brown wink under water.

Let the Purist rejoice in the fly that he dries,
And look down on my practice with hauteur,
But for me the surprise
Of the flash of the rise,
The rosy-brown wink under water.

Oh, give me the day when the fresh from the wold,
Comes down with rich colour of porter,
And tinges with gold
That is flashing and bold
That yellow-green wink under water.

Or a day on some smooth-flowing stream from the chalk,
When Aeolus no ruffle hath wrought her,
The keen subtle stalk
And the reel's sudden talk,
At the rusty-brown wink under water.

I care for no trout that comes up with asplash
To capture the fly that I've brought her,
Let the trout that will dash
At my fly with a flash,
But tip me the wink under water.

When trouting is over, and autumn is here,
The days growing shorter and shorter, The grayling will steer
For my fly with mere
Little hint of a wink under water.

So plunging and rolling I lead her ashore
And as to the bank I escort her,
She repenteth her sore,
That she'll never no more
Give me that silver-brown wink under water.

So here's to the fish that is crafty and shy,
With the lore that Dame Nature has taught her,
Yet we'll lure her to die,
As she captures our fly
With that giddy brown wink under water.

3 Musketeers

3 Musketeers • this painting is reserved

Well, I'm back. For the last couple weeks I have been sorting, throwing, moving, and giving away eight and a half years of stuff that occupied my old studio. My new studio needs a bit of paring down, but it looks really great. I love it. I can breathe there. I can look through two massive windows. I can stroll 13 paces in one direction without stopping. And, it's in my own corner of the world at Banana Factory.

First Friday was tingling with excitement. It was the unofficial opening of my new space. Great standards sung by Dean, Frank, Dinah, Ella and Billie were on the stereo, candles were lit, beer and wine were served ... and lots and lots of friends, family and art lovers from both sides of the pond were congregating in my studio. It was a wonderful night for me ... and Mom's picture was hung in a place of honor right outside my door.

So, for anyone waiting patiently for their paintings, please forgive the delay. I'm back in the swing of things, working loooong hours and starting to feel like I'm where I belong ... again.

The day before my NEW STUDIO opening !!

Ok, ok ... I know ... I haven't painted a Painting Each Day in four days. BUT, I have been painting for hours and hours and days and days. I've painted the downstairs main featured artist wall, I've painted three exterior walls from my old studio .... AND, I've painted my NEW STUDIO exterior walls. The colors are medium grey, stone and deep red. It looks SO great!!! I have all of my Painting Each Day paintings on the grey wall, my doorway is framed by the stone wall and my print 'gallery' is backed by the deep red wall. I've hung all of the Painting Each Day paintings and most of my large oils ... the studio looks fantastic!!!!

Thank you to my wonderful sister Karen for putting in as much time as I have. I couldn't have done all this without you. Thanks for making it fun!!

So, please be my guest tomorrow evening ... 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. (I'm sure it will run later than that). I'm going to take photos of everything and post them over the weekend.

Apologies to those of you waiting for your commissioned Painting Each Day paintings. I'll be painting them from my new studio beginning Monday.

My new studio is dedicated in loving memory of my Mother.

I miss you Mom.
