Chinese Checkers

Chinese Checkers

My Mother sent this vintage game to my brother when he lived in Colorado. We grew up around board games and cards and bean bags and croquet. I can still see my Father walking on stilts in the front yard. He made them in his downstairs workshop. He also made the bean bag boards and my Mother sewed the bags. They were a team.
A great team.

I think we probably grew up in the greatest time. TV was new with only a channel or two, families socialized on porches, men wore hats, women were ladies, Moms were old fashioned. I respect the modern Mother certainly, but, I'm so glad for my 'traditional' upbringing. My Father worked outside the home, my Mother worked inside the home - and they shared all responsibility .. a great balance. Add an apron, great cooking skills, German chocolate cake, devotion to church, our garden and gazebo, her pearl necklace ... and loving and caring for our Family ... and there you have it ... my Mom.

Mom, you would have loved the Memorial service this evening ... your whole family was there ... and I donated the painting I did of the garden while You and Dad were sitting in the gazebo ... we'll find a perfect place for it ... we all miss you so much ...

Sorry!

Sorry! • this painting is sold

The earliest variation of today's Sorry! can be traced back to England, shortly before its arrival in the United States. Sorry! was adopted by Parker Brothers in 1934, and has remained in their possession since. It is an American hallmark board game, being played by generations of Americans, as well as throughout the world.

Peas in a Pod

Peas in a Pod • this painting is sold

I always loved the look of peas in a pod. So interesting, great color. And 'fun', too! Nowadays it seems to be a novelty to shuck peas - an 'organic' adventure that I'd practice maybe once in my lifetime ... a hip, very 'Martha' experience. Back to nature. But think of our great grandparents ... when this everyday - or so - activity was just the normal way of life.

I remember shucking corn in the backyard for my Mother. At the time it may have seemed somewhat like a chore ... but now I look back and think how lucky I was to have this everyday - or so - summer activity. To be in the yard, under the old Maple tree ... the fountain gurgling, the squirrels chasing each other, the birds taking care of their nests in the bird houses that my Father built ... shucking corn ... and then to be enjoyed a second time around when the supper bell rang.

Yahtzee!

Yahtzee! • this painting is sold

C'mon, gimme sixes ... C'mon Yahtzee Schmatzee!!

Who doesn't love a rousing game with friends and family. When we were little, in addition to our Christmas presents from Santa, the five children also received a game ... One year it would be Parcheesi or Monopoly or The Game of Life. We were certainly game players ... and card players, too.

I hope that kids today know how much fun an evening around a board game can be. Those may just be the moments that you'll remember when you're all grown up.

Trust

On June 23rd I was a vendor in the Great Tastes of PA Wine and Food Festival. I wasn't in my normal thoughts and made mistakes on four credit slips. My Mother was very ill and I couldn't focus.

In the past I have several times given prints and stated 'just send a check when you can'' ... and I have ALWAYS received a check from anybody that I entrusted. Always. Sometimes you just know that people are good and when they're happy with you .. and your art .. you just have to have faith that people will do the right thing. Most of the time, they've included beautiful hand written notes - that I always keep - stating how it made them feel so good to be trusted. And that makes me feel so good, too. Trust me.

Gosh, I miss you, Mom ...

Landscape Painting, farmland, eastern PA

Farmland, eastern PA

Today is the first day that I picked up my brushes since my wonderful Mother passed away on July 7th. The paints and brushes felt good in my hand. This scene is my depiction of the beautiful farmland on Rt. 33, east of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

This painting is not included in my 'Painting Each Day' series. However, I will begin painting my 6" x 6" canvases this week.

Thank you to all of my friends and family who were thinking of us during this very sad time. I appreciate all of your cards, flowers, thoughts and prayers more than you know.

In friendship,

Ann

Cary's House

Cary's House • this painting is sold

Picking up and moving ... to a new city, a new state ... a new home is something we don't experience often. I did it twice ... when I moved to Cape May, NJ ... and then when I moved back. Certainly there are nostalgic feelings and clinging to the familiar ... but there is an excitement to moving into a new home, a liberation in starting fresh, hope with beginning anew.

So best wishes in your new home, Cary. I hope that you enjoy the painting of your little porch with the yellow door.

Animations

Animations

I attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia over a period of four years to learn the aspects of graphic design. I knew that mastering (I use that term loosely) the Adobe software products like Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator, InDesign, and other fascinating software including Director, Flash etc. would help me in my quest to create a custom website and design limited edition prints of my paintings.

Well, I also was hired by the local newspaper to create animations - banner ads - for various businesses. I'd work tirelessly, hour after hour, and only get paid $15.00 for each. But, that little job introduced me to a wonderful new marketing tool: animated announcements ... featuring my paintings. So, I have collected an email list of about 1300 people which includes local politicians, community leaders, business men and women, art lovers, friends and family ... oh, and people that I have never met or never heard of, but added their email to my list from people who don't send their emails BCC (blind carbon copy).

Which brings me to one question for Steve Jobs concerning one very big disappointment about the iPhone. WHY didn't you included BCC with the email functions. That to me is a biggie .... I use BCC all of the time. (bcc is when you send an email to a bunch of people and the recipients only see your name, not the list to whom I've sent the email). When I send my animated evites to my list, they're always BCC and I never share email addresses ... I'm very careful and respectful about that. (if you'd like to be on my list, certainly send me your email address - I send announcements for First Friday, Wine Festivals and any art related events in which I am participating).

ALTHOUGH, I might add, everything else on the iPhone (which I do not have by the way) looks mouth open incredible. Dear Steve Jobs, please refer to my note addressed to you, dated Saturday, June 30th on my Painting Each Day blog.

One more note. If you'd like to have an animation custom created for you, please let me know. We can discuss!

Phoebe Ministries - The Garden

Phoebe Ministries - The Garden

My Mother is resting and eating and living at Phoebe Ministries. Our room is quiet and peaceful ... and the nurses and attendants we rely on for healing, are now friends. We've been there since January and now it's life as we know it.

But what do we know about aging? What do we know about losing our lives or the life of a loved one? How do sons and daughters prepare to say goodbye to their Mothers ... or Fathers? How does one cope?
Will the sting ever lessen?

And what if, for our whole lives, the threat of losing our Mom and our Dad hasn't reached us - we are carefree - ... and now ... and suddenly, our greatest fears are right before us. Isn't it strange that most of our parents have gone through this .... and go on to lead lives that have purpose and richness and happiness. How did they survive this? Did they take comfort in their loved ones? Do they suffer in silence? And what if a son or daughter doesn't have a wife or husband or children or pets ... with whom do they summon their strength ... with whom do they share their grief?

Gosh ... today was so hard.

Love your Mother and your Father.

This painting - 'Phoebe Ministries - The Garden' will be donated to Phoebe to hang in the east hall where my Mother is being loved and cared for by the nurses and attendants and her Husband and Children.

Dick Blick Cadmium Red (hue)

Dick Blick Cadmium Red (hue)

Gosh, I'm so lucky to have a great art supply store right down the street! I'm not the typical shopper .... my one sister buys cutesy little 'tchotchke' things, my other sister buys clothes ... by the closet full. But me, I don't really spend my money on trinkets or adornments ... but place me in an art store, and I'm the kid in a candy store.

Dick Blick has great sales, too. I buy all of my Painting Each Day canvases there, all of my oils and brushes and medium as well. The store is large and airy and I'm happy to just stroll along the aisles enjoying the art supplies. There's a peacefulness as well as intrigue and excitement to see all of the ' Gizmos, Gadgets, Goodies Galore' as Dr. Seuss would say.

Three Tomatoes

Three Tomatoes

Ahhh .... Summer. Yesterday, my friend Diana came over to my Parent's home ... I had planted their garden this year. Well, we filled the colander with basil, rosemary, oregano, mint, cilantro, parsley, lavender and the first few tomatoes that were ready to pick.

Tonight my brother Jim grilled Salmon steaks with herbs and drizzles of Téméraire mustard and tarragon. Accompanying the Salmon was rice with almonds ... and salad. Salad with basil, rosemary, oregano, parsley and cilantro .. all from my Parent's garden. There's nothin' like Fresh!!

We dined outside by the pool. We sipped dry red wine and listened to Louie Armstrong and Rosemary Clooney.

Ahhh .... Summer.
