Godiva was founded in 1926 in Brussels, Belgium by Joseph Draps. The chocolatier opened his first boutique in the Grand Place in Brussels, Belgium. under it's present name, a name chosen in honor of the legend of Lady Godiva. The first Godiva shop outside Belgium was opened in Paris in 1958; in 1966, the company's products reached the United States, where it was sold at luxury department stores. In 1978, the first Godiva boutique in North America was opened on New York's Fifth Avenue.

Besides chocolates, Godiva also sells truffles, coffee, cocoa, biscuits, dipped fruits and sweets, "Chocolixir" beverages, wedding and party favors and other items arranged in gift baskets. Godiva's signature package is the Gold Ballotin (French for "small, elegant box of chocolates"). Godiva also produces seasonal and limited edition chocolates with special packaging for all major holidays. Godiva also has license agreements for the production of ice cream, cheesecake, coffee pods and liqueur that comes in several chocolate-related flavors.

Well, this is my entry for this year's Banana Factory Artists' Annual. It's an acrylic painting measuring 36" x 36" featuring three musicians during the 'Jazz a Juan' Jazz Festival in Antibes Juan-les-Pins. Certainly I was inspired by the beautiful Riviera with the Mediterranean sea, white sandy beaches, cobblestone walkways, Provençal cuisine and regional wines -- along with the many museums including the Matisse, Chagall, Musée des Beaux Arts, Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, along with the reopening of the Picasso Museum -- and just the everyday pleasures of life in the South of France ... I keep with me until I return again ...

Well, I spent many evenings enjoying 'Jazz a Juan' in Antibes Juan-les-Pins this past July. So many fantastic world renowned musicians !! One of my favorite singers was a beautiful woman originally from Bucks County, PA. Her name is Nicole Henry and let me tell you - what a voice !!! And class and style and friendliness. She really brought the house down for me. I have two of her cds, both of which are fantastic, but my favorite is 'The Nearness of You'.

Cote d'Azur • the Antibes paintings

This painting is one in my current series entitled 'The Antibes Paintings'. I don't know if the Bethlehemites and the Banana Factory visitors will be ready for this series ... they're used to my tightly painted, classically rendered oil paintings ... but, it's what I'm feeling since I've returned from the south of France. It feels good to lighten up my palette and paint freely with bright colors and uneven lines.

It's amazing what an influence Europe is on my life ... in Germany I discovered the expressionists and my eyes were opened to modern art. In France I fell in love with Monet and Matisse and Chagall ... and they're with me every day since my return.

Now wouldn't an 'Antibes' painting go nicely in your living room or enclosed garden terrace?

My Exposition

This is the beautiful and ancient 'Galerie des Bains Douches' where my exposition 'JAZZ' took place in the month of July, 2008. I'm not sure exactly when this building was built ... but I'm guessing well over 1000 years ago. How cool is this? Old stone building ... stone fireplace ... stone walls and floors ... halogen lights ... and my Music Series. ... oh ... and the French Riviera ...

I miss it. Every day.

Last night my we went through some of my Parent's things ... and we came across an old Hess's box filled with love letters. Hundreds of letters, notes, cards ... words of love. My Mother was only 20 years or so .. and already received hundreds of love letters ... love letters to lead to 60 years of marriage - and more love letters ... and a husband who mourned her departure until he passed away a year later. Now ... what is love ... enduring true love ... compared to that?

I could, ever so possibly, be paralyzed with grief again ... still
