Red Apple

Red Apple • this painting is sold

Ahhh ... the Red Apple.

“Underneath an apple-tree
Sat a maiden and her lover;
And the thoughts within her he
Yearned, in silence, to discover.
Round them danced the sunbeams bright,
Green the grass-lawn stretched before them
While the apple blossoms white
Hung in rich profusion o'er them.”

Will Carleton

Pomegranate

Pomegranate • this painting is sold

Today I met a beautiful woman. She had ordered two paintings from me - a Pomegranate and an apple. So ... pomegranates being out of season - I searched at Wegmans and the Farmers' Market - no luck so I thought it might be ok to reference the pomegranate that I had painted a while back. BUT, I did buy a couple apples to paint them from life.

I was invited to deliver these two paintings to her home ... and WHAT a home it is !!! Beautiful and stately ... but when you enter, you are welcomed by an atmosphere of clean lines, manicured tastes, beautiful period furniture AND incredible paintings on every wall !!! Now THAT'S the kind of home that I just love. No buying large prints of cobblestone meandering paths ... or cottages beyond candlelit bridges. This home was the real deal. Lovely ... as lovely as the owner. And, to my surprise, she had already purchased a painting of mine from 'Art in the Park' ... right before I left for France.

I walked away from her home feeling such a sense of heightened spirits ... a sophisticated and kind woman buying a few paintings from me ... her love of art, her beautiful home ... she restored hope in me in just the few moments that we spent together.

I am happy that she will visit my exhibition at The Farmhouse. And ... knowing that she too is a collector. Thank you Lois - I hope that I have the pleasure to visit with you again.

Martini

Martini • this painting is sold

The power of the internet.

It always makes me feel great when someone from another country finds me and my art through the internet. The information superhighway. Since August 2006, I've painted hundreds of 'paintingeachday' paintings and most of them have sold. There's always a little extra thrill when I ship my paintings overseas ... Europe ... for those of you who know me, it's what I think about most.

I've traveled through many European countries ... England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Switzerland ... but I've grown roots in Germany and France. In particular, Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany and Antibes, France. They are filled with culture and revel in it. It's where I feel the most free ... the most creative.

Schwaebisch Gmuend - some of the deepest friendships that I've had ... kindness, generosity ... incredible individuals, speaking several languages, playing instruments, dinners and crafted wines ... Antibes - museums and music, opera and jazz ... painting ... champagne ... and the sea ... the beautiful blue Mediterranean. One day ... I pray, please let me live there - Antibes - by the sea - painting, enjoying, walking, breathing .... gourmet dinners with friends and music ... it's Paradise ... it's what I need, what I want ... with a little apartment in Schwaebisch Gmuend ... is it so much to ask for, to pray for ?

Red Sox Baseball XVII

Red Sox Baseball XVII • this painting is sold

What is it about those Red Sox Baseball fans ? Out of all the baseball teams, the Red Sox fans are the only fans who ever commissioned me to paint a baseball for them - that is my 6" x 6" one a day paintings. I must confess that I did receive a commission to do a sports trio with Philadelphia teams (Phillies, Flyers, Eagles), but that wasn't in the 6" x 6" project.

This is the 17th Red Sox baseball painting that I've painted - I could probably paint them in my sleep by now ... and there are two more to complete ... so, from the bottom of my little red heart, I truly thank the fans of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Keep 'em comin' !!

York Peppermint Pattie

The York Peppermint Pattie

The York Peppermint Pattie was first produced in York, Pennsylvania, by Henry C. Kessler at his York Cone Company in 1940, for sale in the Northeastern United States, Ohio, Indiana and Florida. In 1972, the York Cone Company was acquired by Peter Paul, which launched the York Peppermint Pattie nationally in 1975.

In 1978, Peter Paul merged with Cadbury Schweppes. York passed to the Hershey Foods Corporation when it acquired the US operations of Cadbury Schweppes in 1988. Recently production of the York Peppermint Pattie has shifted to Mexico. The confectionery features strongly contrasting flavors, with a particularly bitter chocolate coating around a sugar center. A sugar-free version of the candy is also available. Many chocolate-covered peppermints had been made before the York Peppermint Pattie came on the market, but Kessler's version was firm and crisp, while the competition was soft and gummy.

A former employee and York resident Phil Kollin remembered the final (sample) test the pattie went through before it left the factory. "It was a snap test. If the candy didn't break clean in the middle, it was a second." The current recipe for the candy, however, is soft.

Mr. Potato Head

Mr. Potato Head

While cleaning through my Parents' home ... I found the old Mr. Potato Head box with all of the parts inside. I remember as a child, my Mom would give us real potatoes to carve and create faces with ... a nice memory for me. This, of course, is the 'politically incorrect' Mr. Potato Head ... notice the pipe which no longer is included in the new set.

Red Apple

Red Apple

It's one of the most recognizable expressions around: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But besides the fact that it rhymes, which makes it fun to say and easy to recall, does it really have any value? Could the common apple honestly help a person to maintain perfect health?

With that in mind, let's consider some of the apple's components and their effect on our health:
  • Pectin -- Pectin is a form of soluble fiber than lowers both blood pressure and glucose levels. It can also lower the levels of LDL, or "bad" cholesterol in the body. Pectin, like other forms of fiber, helps maintain the health of the digestive system. Apples are an excellent source of pectin.
  • Boron -- A nutrient found in abundance in apples, boron supports strong bones and a healthy brain.
  • Quercetin -- A flavonoid, this nutrient shows promise for reducing the risk of various cancers, including cancers in the lungs and breast. It may also reduce free radical damage. Free radicals develop when atoms in the body's cells have unpaired electrons, which can lead to damage to different parts of the cell, including DNA. Quercetin may neutralize free radical damage, which has been implicated in a variety of age-related health problems, including Alzheimer's disease.
  • Vitamin C -- Vitamin C boosts immunity, which helps maintain overall health.
  • Phytonutrients -- Apples are rich in a variety of phytonutrients, including vitamins A and E and beta carotene. These compounds fight damage from free radicals and can have a profound affect on health, including reducing the risk of heart disease, diabetes and asthma.
I'd say an apple a day is a good thing ... even if it's just paint on stretched canvas

Apple • Missing BarbaDel

Apple • Missing BarbaDel

Maybe it is only fitting that it is raining today ... really raining and grey and cold. It is one year today that we lost our friend BarbaDel Campbell. If I had to choose a champion of art in the Lehigh Valley, without a doubt it would be BarbaDel. She loved culture. She was savvy and smart and intellectual ... but also held court with the financially downtrodden ... and never lost respect for someone in spite of their income ... unless you were exceedingly rich. She gleaned the best from - and brought out the best in - everyone.

BarbaDel could read you like a book. And books she loved. When she passed away and I visited her apartment for the last time. There were thousands of books - and she prided herself on the fact that she read every one ... at least once. When they packed up all the books, they lay in boxes ... by the dozens ... on her porch. I opened just one box and found a museum book on Picasso, a retro book on cooking for your husband, and an album containing books on Matisse, Goya, Van Gogh and Modigliani. How incredible ... and these pieces from just one box. ... imagine if you could open every box ...

That was BarbaDel. Each year she opened her top floor apartment to all on Christmas eve. Artists and writers and musicians and singers ... and lovers of culture. She entertained us with stories of living in Hell's Kitchen in New York City, working at the Village Scandal in Greenwich Village and dining with Marlene Dietrich. It's almost impossible in life to meet someone like BarbaDel ... truly impossible. And you don't think that things are urgent, that she will be there another day ...

March 6th ... I had made plans with my sister Karen the night before to visit her ... it would be on a Saturday ... and then I received the call that she died. Just a few hours before I would arrive, to be able to listen to her once again ... to hear her funny and miraculous stories ... to be able to tell her how much she enriched our lives ... and to say 'I love you' for the last time.

I miss you BarbaDel. We all do. Certainly a great light has gone out in our every day to day lives.

I cannot even begin to image the heavens with you there ... hanging on your every word, laughing, enjoying your stories and your theatrical voice, drinking a Milwaukee's Best ... and the light ... just a little brighter and warmer because of you.

xoxoxoxoxo
love
Ann

Mary Jane Candy

Mary Jane Candy

In 1884, Charles H. Miller and his three sons founded a small business manufacturing and selling homemade candy. The building where they began making their candy had a notable past -- it was the Paul Revere House in Boston's Faneuil Hall/North End area. (Revere, who in 1775 made the ride from Boston to Lexington alerting the countryside that the British were coming, lived in the house with his family until 1800.)

After their father’s death, the Miller boys split the responsibilities of the family business. Charles N. Miller took charge of the manufacturing and wholesale operations while his brothers ran the retail store. In 1914, after a fairly successful business was established and the Charles N. Miller Company was one of some reputation, they began manufacturing Mary Janes. The molasses and peanut butter candy was named for their favorite aunt, Mary Jane.
