Happy Leap Year !

A leap year (or intercalary year) is a year containing one or more extra days (or, in the case of lunisolar calendars, an extra month) in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year. For example, in the Gregorian calendar, February would have 29 days in a leap year instead of the usual 28.

Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat at an exact number of full days, a calendar which had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By occasionally inserting (or intercalating) an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected. A year which is not a leap year is called a common year.

Ahhh .... stopping by the Valley Farm Market is always a joy. Now I love the Allentown Farmers' Market for the people watching and the fruit and vegetable barkers, but in the event that it's not Thursday through Saturday, the Valley Farm Market is a lovely place to shop. They have fresh fruits and vegetables, wonderful cuts of beef and chicken, homemade soups and a really healthy 'feel' about the place.

I picked up oranges and small purple eggplants, oranges and apples. I really enjoy painting the fruits and veggies ... no 'small print' to fuss with ... and these little paintings look great hanging in a kitchen or dining room ... or just about any where else that makes you happy.

Life Savers

Life Savers

Life Savers is an American brand of ring-shaped mints and fruit-flavored hard candy. The candy is known for its distinctive packaging, coming in aluminum foil rolls of eleven pieces.

In 1912, chocolate manufacturer Clarence Crane (Cleveland, Ohio) invented Life Savers as a "summer candy" that could withstand heat better than chocolate. Since the mints looked like miniature life preservers, he called them Life Savers. After registering the trademark, Crane sold the rights to the peppermint candy to Edward Noble (1882-1958) for $2,900. Instead of using cardboard rolls, which were not very successful, Noble created tin-foil wrappers to keep the mints fresh. Pep-O-Mint was the first Life Savers® flavor. Noble founded the Life Savers Candy Company in 1913 and significantly expanded the market for the candy by installing Lifesavers displays next to the cash registers of restaurants and grocery stores. He also trained the retails owners always to give customers a nickel in their change as doing so would increase sales of Lifesavers. Since then, many different flavors of Life Savers have been produced.

The five-flavor roll first appeared in 1935. Life Savers was a subsidiary of Kraft Foods before being purchased by the Wrigley Company in 2004. In recent years, the brand has expanded to include Gummi Savers, Life Saver Minis, Life Saver Fusions, Creme Savers. Discontinued brands include Fruit Juicers, Holes, Life Saver Lollipops and Squeezit.

York Peppermint Pattie

York Peppermint Pattie

York Peppermint Pattie is a dark chocolate covered peppermint confection produced by the Hershey Foods Corporation, under license from Peter Paul. It was first produced in York, Pennsylvania by Henry C. Kessler at his York Cone Company in 1940, for sale in the northeast US, Ohio, Indiana and Florida.

In 1972, the York Cone Company was acquired by Peter-Paul, which launched the York Peppermint Pattie nationally in 1975. In 1978, Peter-Paul merged with Cadbury Schweppes. York passed to the Hershey Foods Corporation when it acquired the US operations of Cadbury Schweppes in 1988. The confectionery features strongly contrasting flavors, with a particularly bitter chocolate coating around a sugar center. A sugar-free version of the candy is also available.

Many chocolate-covered peppermints had been made before the York Peppermint Pattie came on the market, but Kessler's version was firm and crisp, while the competition was soft and gummy. One former employee and York resident remembered the final (sample) test the patty went through before it left the factory. "It was a snap test. If the candy didn't break clean in the middle, it was a second."

Dioxazine Purple

Dioxazine Purple • this painting is sold

Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple
By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people's gardens and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat and eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickles for a week and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry and pay our rent and not swear in the street and set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Fez and Fish

Fez and Fish • The Anglers' Club of New York • this painting is sold

The Anglers’ Club of New York was founded in 1906 as a private social club of gentlemen and sportsmen, "to cultivate and practice the art of scientific angling; to encourage contests of skill in fly and bait casting; and the protection and propagation of fish and game."

Initially, trout and salmon were the chief interests of the Club’s members. Today, many other sport fish are pursued. In the early days, the art of angling was coupled with the emerging science of the sport, and today the skill, knowledge, techniques, and lore of fly fishing continue as paramount concerns of the Club.

The Club and its members are active in conservation efforts to preserve and restore water to its pristine state. The members believe that in the social enjoyment shared by all anglers lies a common respect and interest in keeping and enhancing the quality of our waters for the future. Catch and release represents one way to leave a stream essentially as it was before, and it reflects the consideration that fellow anglers deserve. Through participation in conservation organizations, the members are active in many places, streams, and rivers & wherever there is, or may be again, fly fishing.

The Club is unique in that, although located in the financial center of the city, it is not used for the transaction of business or for business entertaining (as are some other clubs). The Waltonian legend over the door, "Piscatoribus sacrum," has been so well respected over the years that a pleasant spot without any aspects of the marketplace has been preserved for relaxation in congenial fellowship.

Cooking Dinner

Cooking with the Hen

I found this great Hen at the GoodWill shop on Valentine's Day ... Mmmm .... and saw the cooking possibilities. Luckily, I just happened to have a cookbook on cooking in earthenware vessels. You have to soak the base and lid in cold water for 20 minutes (if the base is glazed on the inside you only soak the lid). Then, place in a cold oven and turn on the heat. First to 250 degrees, then to 400 - to ensure that the vessel doesn't shock - and possibly crack - from the temperature change.

So, I loaded up the hen with red potatoes, rosemary from my garden, Temeraire Dijon Mustard, bulb onions, garlic, cracked peppercorns, sea salt and olive oil ... and in the oven she went.

The presentation is cozy and old world and I look forward to using the Hen again. Also, I look forward to seeing the Hen 'age' with use. The tell tale darkening of the clay revealing the memories of a quiet dinner alone or a celebration with friends ...

Tomatoes on the Vine 2

Tomatoes on the Vine 2

Well, it's snowing in the Northeast. Really coming down and quite beautiful !! I'm wrestling if I would like to make the trek to Bethlehem where my studio is ... or ... stop at the market and get some beef, carrots, onions, celery, beef stock and wine and make Beef Bourguignon at my Father's home. Mmmm ..... comfort food ... I think I'll try to do both !!

I purchased several 40" x 30" canvases and am ready to begin my Antibes Juan-les-Pins paintings ... I have them all mapped out .. but, of course, that is subject to change. I want to include La Mer, sunflowers, olives trees, the castle and some lavender fields. Sounds challenging, but I want to paint them over three canvases side by side. Looking forward to getting started. I'm seeing something bold and bright with a sense of a Van Gosh-esque style. A painting full of activity with colors that draw you in ....

For those of us who love to garden, there's nothing more delicious in the depths of winter than tomatoes on the vine. Okay, you'll pay a pretty penny for this pretty purchase, but when you get home and slice open a vine ripened tomato, it could make all the difference for the dough.

I not only purchased these beautiful tomatoes with a vine of four, but also the cherry tomatoes on the vine that comes in its own red mesh bag ... Mmmm, Mmmm .... fresh salad with ripened tomatoes .... nothin' better .... until summer, that is.

Displaying your Painting Each Day paintings

Dont' these look really great !! These were purchased on Friday and I received this email just yesterday already. What a beautiful home my Painting Each Day paintings have found !!

I have discovered a very easy approach to hanging these paintings - actually, in truth I must give credit to my buddy and fellow artist 'Katie Behler'. I measure with a level that has ruler measurements on the side. With pencil, I mark a dot two inches wide. I insert common push pins and Voila! you place the painting on the push pins and you're done.

For my outside studio wall where my Painting Each Day paintings are displayed, I measured out the WHOLE wall (two inches, eight inches, two inches, eight inches), marked the whole wall with dots, inserted the push pins, and placed almost two hundred paintings in just an hour or two. It works great! And, no wires, no hooks, no remeasuring, no headache. The push pins work GREAT in drywall as well! And no messy nail marks if you want to relocate the paintings in the future.

So, why not purchase a bunch of Painting Each Day paintings for YOUR beautiful kitchen ... and when you place your paintings, think of Katie Behler when you discover the user friendly ease of using common push pins !!

Chambord

Chambord • this painting is sold

Chambord is inspired by a unique raspberry liqueur produced in the Loire Valley of France during the late 17th Century. The liqueur is said to have been introduced to King Louis XIV during one of his visits to the Chateau de Chambord during his reign. It was common at that time for liqueurs and cognacs to be consumed during elegant meals.

Today, Chambord is enjoyed throughout the world. Embraced for its velvety rich taste and versatility. it is delicious neat, on the rocks, as a flavorful ingredient in cocktails or with champagne. Chambord readily transforms the ordinary drinks occasion into an extraordinary experience.

Chambord is crafted from the world's finest raspberries and blackberries. Madagascar vanilla, Moroccan citrus peel, honey and cognac to create a delicous all-natural Black Raspberry liqueur.

This evening I had a wonderful iced coffee with vanilla nut cream -- and laced with Chambord. Now that's delicious !

Valentine Chocolates

Valentine Chocolates

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways ..."

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Conversation Hearts

Conversation Hearts

A wonderful memory for me was during my Valentine Birthday party many years ago. We were passing around the Conversation Hearts and we'd dip our hand in the bowl (not being able to see what we were picking) and we'd read allowed what the hearts had printed on them.

There were several sweet and romantic moments between my Mom and Dad after reading the Conversation Hearts. It's a very nice memory for me ...

But dont change a hair for me

Wow ... what a game !!! Most unbelievable play: When Eli Manning threw a pass to David Tyree and he actually pinned it on his helmet with his right hand and pulled it in before he hit the ground. Oh my gosh !! We were screaming .... but, you gotta love the Patriots as well. What an unbelievably wonderful team ...

Thanks Sharon and Dave for the party - fun as usual !!

Favorite commercial: Cut to New York - Central Park - a beautiful autumn day and the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is underway. Large balloons 'Underdog' and 'Stewie' free loose to chase a balloon Coca-Cola bottle. Both fight for it, but .... in the end, from behind the Chrysler building, Charlie Brown emerges and the Coca-Cola bottles floats into his arms.

Strawberries

Friday, February 1st, the Banana Factory celebrated our 10th Anniversary. I will be there 9 years on May 15th. It's a wonderful place to have your studio. My studio is large, with huge windows facing the north light. I paint while listening to 'Learn French' cds, or classical music or jazz. I found an incredible cd that I just can't get enough of ... Beegie Adair: My Romance.

Ms. Adair glides over the piano keys and her music is complemented by brushes on the drums and an upright bass. It is wonderful uplifting music at its best!

Oh ... the Banana Factory served scrumptious birthday cake and these delightful strawberries at our 10th Anniversary party .... Mmmmm Mmmm !!

Apples and Apple Pie

Apples and Apple Pie

I wish that I were a better baker. I should actually say an 'ardent' baker. I love the whole process ... the application of the apron, the preparation of the surface, the careful mixing of the ingredients, the clean old fashioned towels, the creating of the masterpiece ... but MOST of all ... the aroma of warmth that embraces the whole household. Baking is an art all of its own.

Now, if my art were compared to a cooking style, I would bet that it would be aligned with a sautéing style. A flash in the pan. Throwing vegetables, fish, meat, chicken - tons of spices and peppers and .... whooooosh ... there ya go. But 'baking' ... no 'whooooosh' in baking. There is precision and measurement and focus and dedication ... and an incredible result.

For the Best result ... immerse yourself in Better Baking:

www.BetterBaking.com

Be sure to visit -- it's a fantastic website - warm and loving and cozy ... with wonderful recipes - even for us 'sautéing' kind of gals ... but, how great would it be to bake a pie or bread or scones ... for your loved one on Valentine's Day. How great would it be to fill your home with the aroma of old fashioned baking. Maybe as a remembrance to your Mom ... and I miss my Mom so much ....

My birthday happens to be on Valentine's Day ... and it's the first birthday that I won't have my Mother by my side ... so, maybe, just maybe, I'll have to bake something wonderful ... maybe a Valentine shaped birthday cake ... just like my Mom used to do for me.
