iMouse

iMouse • this painting is sold

iMac

Ahhh .... the iMac G5. I purchased mine last May and it's been one year of computer bliss. I enjoy the 20" flat screen, the sleek uncomplicated design, the simple navigation and, of course, the standard of computer excellence. It's a vast improvement to my old G3 sporting the bulky back to the non-flat screen and the huge tower that took up much needed space. But, understandably, that also was the best at its time.

iPhone

Last night I viewed the online guided tour through the iPhone. WOWZA ... very neat, but being an artist who lives by the sales of her paintings, sadly the iPhone is not in my budget right now.

Dear Mr. Steve Jobs, if for any reason you would like for me to have an Apple iPhone as a gift, I would be most grateful. Maybe we could make a trade? I absolutely love my iMac G5 (my third Apple computer) and my favorite movie is Finding Nemo. Thank you for your standards of unparalleled excellence in quality and design.

Bask in the glory. You ARE the best.

Respectfully yours,
Ann

White Rose

White Rose • this painting is sold

Red roses say “I love you” and also stand for respect and courage.

Rosebuds symbolize beauty, youth and a heart innocent of love or: “You are young and beautiful.” Red rosebuds mean “pure and lovely” and white rosebuds signify girlhood or “too young to love.” The moss rosebud stands for confessions of love.

A single rose stands for simplicity. In full bloom, it means “I love you” or “I love you still,” and a bouquet of roses in full bloom signifies gratitude.

White roses have several meanings: “You’re heavenly,” reverence and humility, innocence and purity, “I’m worthy of you,” and secrecy and silence.

Red and white roses together, or white roses with red edges, signify unity.

Pink roses in general symbolize grace and gentility. For more subtle shades of meaning, choose deep pink to stand for gratitude and appreciation. Light pink conveys admiration and sympathy.

Yellow roses usually stand for joy and gladness, but can also say “try to care.”

Red and yellow blends stand for jovial and happy feelings.

Coral or orange roses denote enthusiasm and desire.

A deep burgundy rose means “unconscious beauty.”

Pale colors convey sociability and friendship.

Hybrid tea roses mean “I’ll remember you always” and sweetheart roses symbolize just what their name implies.

Two roses taped or wired together to form a single stem signal an engagement or coming marriage.

A full blown rose placed over two buds forms a combination that signifies secrecy.

Withered white roses have two meanings: fleeting beauty and “you made no impression.”

A crown made of roses signifies reward or virtue.

Rose leaves are a symbol of hope.

Liquin

Liquin

I discovered Liquin many years ago and still use it in my oil paintings. Sometimes I will complete one of these 6" x 6" paintings and only use the Liquin as a finishing glaze. It adds a wonderful sheen without being too glossy. Also, it adds a richness to the deep hues that lose some luster in the drying process.

Liquin is a quick-drying medium for oil and alkyd paint. Used as an additive in many forms of artwork, liquin is produced by several companies and has a number of uses. Notably it is used to speed the drying time in oil painting though it may also be used as a barrier layer to achieve some effects. Painted over the top of etchings, Indian ink drawings and other line art it enables the application of colours by tinting with thin glazes of oil paint.

Baseball

Baseball

My Father was always an expert at finding neat stuff. He'd walk home three miles every night from work to arrive in time for dinner at 5:30. Usually there was something in his pocket that he'd find along the way: an old cut glass doorknob, vintage milk bottles, a Penn State sweatshirt (he found that in a bush) with the tags still on, etc. Naturally, there was always a rousing game of 20 questions. Last week his prize was a green tennis ball that he found by the curb.

So, when I was driving home the other night, I stopped my car, opened the door and leaned down to grab this baseball that was waiting in the middle of the street.

My Dad's gonna love it!

Great Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine and Food Festival

Great Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine and Food Festival

Today I leave for the 17th Annual Great Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine and Food Festival. It's held outside in the Pocono Mountains. There are many wineries located under large tents nestled under tall pines, bands are playing and crafters and artists are displaying their work. .... and there's me, selling my Cocktail Prints and cocktail aprons and acrylic and oil paintings. I've participated in four wine festivals last year: Split Rock, Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley and the East Hampton Wine Festival, and Split Rock and the Hudson Valley Wine Festival were, to me, the most beautiful. Don't get me wrong, the East Hampton Wine Festival was in a gorgeous educational facility set in a wooded natural environment and was absolutely stunning ... but you didn't hang out and swig wine under a tent in the Hamptons. It was 'best behavior' time there.

So wish me luck, I'm on my way ... and Mom, I want you to relax and let everybody pamper you ... I'll be back before you know I'm gone.

Popeye Spinach

Popeye Spinach

Popeye Spinach Triangles

1 can (13.5 oz.) Popeye Spinach
1/4 to 1/2 lb. butter, melted
6 green onions, minced
1 cup crumbled Feta cheese
2 Tablespoons fresh breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/4 cup minced parsley
1 Tablespoon chopped fresh dill weed
Fresh ground pepper
8 or 12 phyllo pastry sheets
1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs (for slices)

Preheat oven to 375°F. Drain spinach well, pressing to remove as much moisture as possible. Saute onion in 1 Tablespoon butter. Combine onions, spinach, cheese, 2 Tablespoons breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, dill weed, and pepper.

Triangles: Brush 1 sheet phyllo dough with melted butter. Cut into 2-inch wide strips. Cover remaining dough with wax paper and damp towel to prevent drying. With 2-inch edge toward you, place 1 level teaspoon cheese mixture on left hand corner of strip. Fold corner with filling up and to the right, diagonally and straight until a triangle is formed. Place on a baking sheet; brush with melted butter. Repeat with remaining dough. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until puffy and brown. Serve warm.

Slices: Place 1 phyllo sheet lengthwise in front of you on a sheet of waxed paper. Brush with butter and sprinkle with fresh breadcrumbs. Repeat until 4 phyllo sheets are stacked. Spread 1/3 of spinach mixture over top phyllo sheet. Roll tightly as for a jelly roll, using waxed paper to lift and guide the roll. Transfer to baking sheet. Brush with melted butter. Repeat until 3 rolls are made, keeping the remaining phyllo dough covered with waxed paper and a damp towel as you work to prevent drying. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Cut into 1-inch slices using a serrated or electric knife.

Refrigerated, canned crescent rolls may be substituted for phyllo pastry sheets.

Makes 40 to 50 appetizers.

Morton Salt Girl

Morton Salt Girl • this painting is sold

Morton Salt is a United State company specializing in the production of salt for food, water conditioning, industrial, agricultural, and road/highway use.

The company began in Chicago, Ill in 1848 as a small sales agency. In 1910 , the business, which had by this time become both a manufacturer and a merchant of salt, was incorporated as the Morton Salt Company.

At present the business, still based in Chicago, is North America's leading producer and marketer of salt. Its main facility, the second-largest solar saline operation in North America, is in Matthew Town, Inagua, The Bahamas.

In 1999 Morton Salt was acquired by the Philadelphia-based Rohm and Haas Company, Inc and operates as a division of that company today.

Morton Salt's distinctive hand-drawn logo features the "Morton Salt Girl," a young girl between the ages of seven and nine standing in the rain with an opened umbrella, and scattering salt behind her from a cylindrical container of table salt. The company's logo, developed in 1914, and its motto, "When it rains, it pours" (developed in 1911), were developed to illustrate the point that Morton Salt was free flowing, even in rainy weather. Originally, the company had added magnesium carbonate as an absorbing agent to ensure that its table salt was free flowing; calcium silicate is now used instead for the same purpose.

The founder of the Morton Salt company, Joy Morton, was the son of J. Sterling Morton, who was the founder of Arbor Day.

Milano cookies

Milano cookies • this painting is sold

Milano cookies are a trademarked dessert manufactured by Pepperidge Farm as part of their series of "European" cookies. They are of the sandwich form, with a thin, rich layer of chocolate as filling. The baked halves are reminiscent of oval vanilla wafers and are notable for their texture, which is promoted as being crumbly yet smooth.

The Milano was created as a result of Pepperidge Farm's original cookie concept, the Naples, which was a single vanilla wafer cookie with dark chocolate filling topping it. The problem this posed was that Naples cookies would end up stuck together when shipped to and sold in warmer climates. The company resolved the problem by sandwiching Naples cookies together, creating the new Milano variety. To this day, Milano is the most popular brand sold by Pepperidge Farm.

The original variety used a filling of dark chocolate. Many additional varieties have since been marketed, such as milk chocolate; other flavors include a layer of mint or sweet orange paste in addition to some form of chocolate.

Milano cookies have primarily been marketed towards adults, as an indulgence food, rather than children.

Father's Day • Pretzel

Father's Day • Pretzel

Tomorrow is Father's Day. How do I celebrate decades of love and guidance and support and friendship from my Dad? How do I honor his always being there for me - for his laughter, his honesty,
his sensitivity and his goodness. How do I let him know that his kindness and compassion for my Mother, his wife, means everything to me? And how do simple words like 'Happy Father's Day' convey my deep love for him and my sincerest desires for his health and happiness?

Happy Father's Day Dad. Know how much you mean to me.
With love and gratitude, Ann

Art in the Park

Grandma's Tree

Karen, Diana and Jim

Today was the 33rd Annual 'Art in the Park'. It was a gorgeous day ... blue skies, puffy clouds, cool temperatures and a light breeze ... that is until the usual 'Art in the Park' lightening, thunder and rains poured in around 4:00 p.m.

My Father's Mother - 'Grandma' was a founding member of the 'West Park Civic Association' which hosts the annual 'Art in the Park'. She lived across from the park on Turner St. in a beautiful large five bedroom row home that was built for my great-grandparents in 1911. My Father and his sister, Aunt Betty, were born on the second floor. In later years, Grandma would sit on the porch and sip Old Fashioned cocktails and listen to the band playing in the bandshell ... The Allentown Band ... the oldest organized band in the United States.

Grandma passed away in 1993, but the West Park Civic Association planted a beautiful tree in her honor. The plaque reads:

Mary Hecker Schlegel
A long time neighbor and friend of West Park

Oreo Cookies

Oreo Cookies

Oreos were introduced by Nabisco Corporation in February 1912 to mainly target the British market, whose biscuits were seen by Nabisco to be too 'ordinary'. Originally, Oreos were mound-shaped and available in two flavours; lemon meringue and cream. They were sold for 30 cents a pound in novel tin cans with glass tops, which allowed customers to see the cookies.

A newer design was introduced in 1916, and as the cream filling was by far the more popular of the two available flavors, Nabisco discontinued production of the lemon meringue filling during the 1920s. The modern-day Oreo was developed in 1952 by William A Turnier, to include the Nabisco logo.

There are many theories pointing to the origin of the name 'Oreo', including derivations from the French word 'Or', meaning gold (as early packaging was gold), or the Greek word 'Oreo', meaning mountain or hill (as the original Oreo was mound shaped). Other theories are that the 're' from cream was 'sandwiched' between the two Os from chocolate, or the word 'just seemed like a nice, melodic combination of sounds'.

As the modern design of the Oreo cookie allows it to be eaten in several ways, there is differing opinion on how to consume an Oreo. While some people eat the cookie without taking it apart, others like to 'disassemble' the Oreo into its constituent parts of wafers and filling. The Oreo may then be 'dunked' in milk The official Oreo website recommends twisting the Oreo apart, licking out the cream and dunking the remaining biscuits in milk.

Cyclamen

Cyclamen

Happy 80th Birthday Mom!!

Her love is like
an island in life's ocean,
vast and wide
A peaceful, quiet shelter
From the wind, the rain, the tide.

'Tis bound on the north by Hope,
By Patience on the West,
By tender Counsel on the South
And on the East by Rest.

Above it like a beacon light
Shine Faith, and Truth, and Prayer;
And thro' the changing scenes of life
I find a haven there.

Sharon and Sheba

Tuesday Afternoon with Sharon

Do you ever experience one of those 'delicious' afternoons, an impromptu get-together with a special friend - a day filled with indulgence - flavors that awaken and excite the senses ... and even a little inebriation. Well that day was today.

My friend Sharon does everything with passion. She lives with passion and loves with passion. She has the great command of attention to detail and she is the quintessential nurturer ... from the grand overture of heady and elaborate meals to the little gifts and goodies that you'll find tossed in the bottom of your take home bags. She is both spontaneous and generous beyond compare.

Sharon has a true sense of style with her beautifully laid table presentations ... flowers and herbs from her country garden and splashes of color from her French napkins to her olive oil dishes. Their home is a haven for comfort and visiting her is true pleasure for your soul.

So thank you so much Sharon for a wonderful, wonderful day ... and you too, Dave ... for looking out for us having a wee bit of toooo much fun! I love you both. xoxo

Today was the day that I happened upon the 'Farm Stand' on Emmaus Ave. I've always stopped to shop there, but today was the first shopping day of this summer. So, I picked many vegetables to grill on my stove top: eggplant, zucchini, onions, mushrooms, japapeños, green beans and corn.

Steaming and grilling on the stove was incredible ... and then I watched 'The Holiday' ... and it was good ... but, afterwards, I put in the familiar and most loved 'Something's Gotta Give'. .... for the hundredth time (conservatively speaking) !!!!!!!!!!

Baileys Irish Cream II

Baileys Irish Cream II

Baileys Irish Cream Brownie Pie

1 (10.5 oz) packet fudge brownie mix (Betty Crocker)*
4 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons water
1 large egg
1 (3 oz) packet Jell-O Cook & Serve vanilla pudding mix
1 1/2 cups milk
1/2 cup Baileys Irish Cream
1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or 6 oz chopped semi-sweet chocolate
3 1/4 cups frozen non-dairy whipped topping, thawed (8 oz container)
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease a 9-inch deep-dish glass pie plate very well.

In a mixing bowl, stir together brownie mix, oil, water and egg until mixed. Spread brownie batter in pie plate; bake for 20-23 minutes or until cooked, but still fudgy. Set aside.

Place a mixing bowl (approximately 2 quarts) next to stove.

In a saucepan, whisk together pudding mix, milk, Baileys and gelatin. Turn heat to medium and cook, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens and starts to boil. Turn off heat. Pour approximately 1 cup of the hot pudding mixture into bowl next to stove. Add chocolate chips (or chopped chocolate) to hot pudding mixture in saucepan and stir until chocolate melts (no need for extra heat). Pour hot melted chocolate/pudding mixture over brownie crust, spreading to just shy of the edge.

Lay a small sheet of waxed paper over both chocolate mixture in pie plate and Irish Cream mixture in bowl; let both cool to room temperature. This takes a little over an hour.

When cool, fold 2 cups of whipped topping into the bowl of vanilla pudding/Irish Cream mixture. Spread Irish Cream mixture over melted chocolate/pudding mixture which you have already spread over the crust; Reserve remaining whipped topping.

Chill for about 4 hours. Spread reserved whipped topping over top. When ready to serve, sift cocoa powder over top.

Makes 10 servings

More Notes: I could only find Cook and Serve pudding in a 5 oz box, so I just weighed out 3 ounces on my scale. Instead of placing waxed paper over the cooling pudding mixtures, I used parchment.

Baileys Irish Cream

Baileys Irish Cream

Baileys Irish Cream (the registered trade mark omits the apostrophe), is an Irish whiskey and cream based liqueur, made by R. A. Bailey & Co. of Dublin, Ireland. The trademark is currently owned by Diageo.

Introduced in 1974, Baileys was the first Irish Cream liqueur on the market but there are now a growing number of other brands available. Baileys was the first liqueur to use cream and alcohol together in a manner sufficiently stable to allow commercial distribution. The cream and whiskey are homogenized to form an emulsion, with the aid of an emulsifier containing refined vegetable oil. This process prevents separation of the whiskey and cream during storage. The quantity of other ingredients used is not known but they include chocolate, vanilla, caramel and sugar.

According to the manufacturer no preservatives are required, the whiskey alone is used to preserve the cream.

Yellow Onions

Yellow Onions • this painting is sold

Tonight I baked homemade crabcakes ... made with premium crabmeat, Italian breadcrumbs and olive oil. They were wonderful .... accompanied with a salad with grilled portobellos and yellow onions and grilled flounder. Add a glass of oaky Chardonnay and I've got a great dinner. Yummmm ....

Sunday evenings I like to treat myself to dinner in my apartment, put in a movie - I have a flatscreen tv on top of my refrigerator - (tonight's movie is 'Something's Gotta Give' - again!), have a glass of wine and wait for PBS 39 'EastEnders' episodes at 11:00 and 11:30. If you've never seen 'EastEnder's', it's great! Not anything like American soap operas ... it has a more 'real' feel ... set in Albert Square, London, England with many of the scenes taking place at the Queen Vic pub. Isn't it amazing how engrossed you can become with soap operas ... but,'Eastender's' is my cup of tea. Cheerio and all that ...

It's 11:30 and guess what .... Channel 39 is all cookie crumbles on my tv, so I emailed the station to inquire. Immediately I received a call back ... the antenna at WLVT PBS 39 was hit by lightening ... so NO EastEnders tonight ... gosh ... what a soap opera ...

Orange Blossoms

Orange Blossoms

My Parents' Garden

Here is the garden that I planted for my Father. In the foreground there is a selection of herbs, tomato plants and pepper plants. In the distance is the flower garden. We have French Lavender, Astilbes, Pansies, Ageratums, Geraniums, Daisies, Lavender Beardtongue, Russian Sage and Fuchsias.

My Parents' Gazebo after the storm

Thursday evening a violent storm passed through the Lehigh Valley. Many trees snapped with the strong winds. Our Maple tree, planted over 50 years ago, had two large limbs fall. Sadly, one of the limbs crashed into our Gazebo and destroyed it. My Father built our Gazebo 24 years ago. So many happy moments were shared there ...

Orange Blossoms

I had a lovely visit with my friends Sharon and Dave today. We sipped cold beer and lounged under the garden umbrella by the Orange Blossoms. Before I left, Sharon gave me a clipping from their Orange Blossom bush. Thanks Sharon!

Paper Embosser

Paper Embosser

This was my Grandfather's embosser. When the paper is embossed with this particular tool, the embossed area reads: United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company • Incorporated 1896.

USF&G was a Baltimore, Maryland based insurance company that was acquired by the Saint Paul Companies in 1998. It had originally been called United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company. The USF&G Building was the tallest building in Baltimore. The building is now primarily occupied by Legg Mason and remains (as of 2007) Baltimore's tallest building.

My friend Diana and I are in the habit of folding the bathroom tissue in a pretty v-shape before we leave the bathroom. Well, one day I came over to visit, and not only did she have the toilet tissue folded in a pretty v-shape, but she also embossed it as well! Now that's going the extra mile!!
