African Violets

African Violets • this painting is sold

The African violet (Saintpaulia) is an excellent flowering house plant which will grow and flower under low light intensities found in the average home. Where there is insufficient natural light, they can be grown and flowered successfully entirely under artificial light. Large numbers of different varieties, types and colors available, and the ease with which they can be propagated make this an excellent plant for interior decoration of the home.

African violets may be propagated easily by leaf cutting, and about 6 to 9 months are required to obtain flowering plants. Any leaf is satisfactory if healthy and firm. Remove the entire leaf with petiole (leaf stem) by snapping or cutting it off at the stem of the plant and trim the petiole to about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in length. A combination of half vermiculite and half sand, by volume, makes an ideal propagating medium or the soil used for growing plants may be used. Insert the petiole into the medium by pushing it into a hole made with a pencil or similar tool. Roots normally appear at the petiole base in 3 to 4 weeks under good conditions and leaves of the new plants appear at the medium surface 3 to 4 weeks after root formation.

African Violet caregivers, addled by years of trying to nurse fussier houseplants along, suddenly find themselves successfully nurturing a houseplant that actually rewards their devotion... and buy or propagate just a few more... and a few more. . . and voila! Another Saintpaulia obsession has bloomed!

Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup in Glass II

Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup in a Glass Bottle III • this painting is sold

When I received this complimentary bottle of Heinz Ketchup from the '7 Gate Diner', it was almost empty. I already had a large Heinz Ketchup in the plastic container in my fridge and decided to fill the glass bottle. Remember the song 'Anticipation' with the Heinz Ketchup coming out at an alarmingly slow pace ... they weren't kidding. Of course after I emptied the Ketchup into the bottle, I realized that I prefered the bottle without being full .. so I emptied a lot of the Ketchup back into the plastic container. Once again ... Anticipation.

Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup in Glass

Heinz Tomato Ketchup • this painting is sold

If you believe that it's easy to find a glass bottle of Heinz 57, trust me .. it 'ain't' easy. I searched 'Wegmans', 'Redners', 'Weis Markets' and the Mom and Pop stores ... but finally I found the glass bottles of Heinz Tomato Ketchup at a diner in Allentown, PA. The diner is located on the Northeast corner of 9th and Linden Sts. It's open 24 hours!!!! And ... they have a great selection of food .. from Appetizers to Wraps, from Steak Sandwiches to Pizza, from Entrées to Desserts ... it's cute, too. All decked out with red and white booths with silver accents, tile floors and the 'diner' feel.

The "7 Gate Diner" has a 'retro' feel and the menu is extensive. AND ... they have Ketchup in a glass bottle ... er, one less bottle.

Special K

Special K

I brought home 8 little boxes of cereal from the grocey store ... I had wanted to paint the Special K because the box has such an attractive and identifiable look. This will be tomorrow's breakfast treat.

Arrrrgh .... the second most frustrating thing is not being able to access the internet ... when your ISP (internet service provider) is down. Of course this also includes repeating the same sad story for every technician you phone ... and you're phoning twenty times a day. This also includes being put on hold .. and don't believe them when they say they're coming right back. They're not. Yesterday, while on hold, I listed to Pachabel's Canon for about 10 hours. It's frustrating, it makes you go a little nutty .... AND on top of it all, you're not getting emails and not uploading your paintings. Which can mean that you're also losing money. And I NEED to be online so I can bring my paintings to you.

But THE most frustrating thing is when your ISP goes down and they don't let you know in advance. No warning. No heads up. Soooo ... you think it's your modem, your computer, your phone lines etc. You're unplugging and replugging in, going through tech support, calling up other ISPs in case you want to make a change, calling up your own ISP and finding that they have you listed under dial-up AND listed under 'inactive'. Transfer to supervisor. Oops, wrong information ... or 'jeeze we don't know WHAT's wrong ?????'

But, here there was a power outage with my ISP (rhymes with Earthfink) in the Philadelphia area. Of which I am. BUT, no warning, no info, no heads up .... after two days of phone calls, tech support, trouble shooting, angst, crying and reaching the end of my rope (I can only imagine the comments they have about me in their notes), I have received an email stating that they are comping me one month. Ok ... I'll take it. And two aspirins as well.

It's good to be back online !!

OLD BAY Seasoning II

OLD BAY Seasoning II • this painting is sold
Well, yesterday I stopped in Marshall's Super Store and found these great lobster and crab plates ... they also had crab buckets with shell crackers and seafood forks. It was a tough decision to walk away ... but I did, however, get the cool lobster handled cheese spreads, the red and white checkered tablecloth and the large white fish platter. I was in such a 'Chesapeake Bay' mood ... and then I came home and received a request for an Old Bay Seasoning painting. ... Must've been somethin' fishy in the air.

Cigar and Cutter

CigarFest ... I was the artist for the first and second Cigars International CigarFest poster. So, if you'd like to see the posters for the first two years, please enter: www.annelizabethschlegel.com pulling down the 'Quick Gallery Viewer' on the upper right and stopping on Graphic Design and Art.

I have designed another poster which is available for the cigar festival that would be interested in a poster acknowledging the original cultivator of tobacco - Native Americans. Just let me know. My standard posters measure 36" x 24" and the printing and paper are of the highest quality.

It's great to see the cigar crowd enjoying a keepsake 'collectible' poster designed by and signed by the artist ... appreciation and enjoyment for the work we do is priceless. Thanks!

Tomatoes

Tomatoes • this painting is reserved

Oh my gosh ... the weather today was glorious! My sister Karen and I met at Home Depot and by the time we were finished shopping our cart was full. Buckets full of beautiful pale pink Hydrangeas, deep purple Salvia, French Lavender, purple and yellow pansies, Fuscia bushes and tomatoes plants ... cherry and Roma. But, it's just the beginning of the planting season. Daisies and Impatiens and Rosemany, Basil, Thyme and Sage are to come ... among other herbs.

But for now, it's a garden that's just waiting to blossom. Sadly, the most prized and most missed flower in the garden is my Mum.

Mezzetta Hot Cherry Peppers

Mezzetta Hot Cherry Peppers • this painting is sold

I can't wait to open this jar of peppers ... my whole family craves the hot cherries. The hotter the better. Peppers are some of the most enjoyable 'models' to paint. The assortment of colors ... crimson, orange, yellow, and green accentuate the 'juiciness' of the subject matter and add to the interest of the variety of textures and shapes ... and then of course there's the savouring afterwards.

Ahhh ... the weather is gorgeous, so tomorrow after I'm done helping my Father with the garden and whatever else needs tending to, I'll stop by the Brass Rail and pick up some cheese steaks to accompany these hot cherry peppers. Mmmm ...

Goya Mandarin Soda

Goya Mandarin Soda

I've painted several of the Goya products, but this is the first 'soda' painting. I picked up a bottle of Mandarin Soda at the super market. The orange liquid through the glass makes for a refreshing painting.

Goya Ice Cream Soda recipe:
Quick, creamy and delicious, these soda floats put a fruity twist on an ice cream parlor classic. They're easy to make: vanilla ice cream and your favorite fruit-flavored Refresco Goya soda are all you need. Try Coconut, Mandarin or Strawberry for great-tasting ice cream floats, Goya-style.

Ingredients:
1 bottle (12 oz.) Refresco Goya Soda
1 scoop vanilla ice cream

Directions:
1. Fill a large glass 1/2 to 2/3 full with soda. Add a scoop of ice cream and stir with a long spoon.
2. Stick in a straw, stir and enjoy!

Custom Framing

White Castle 2 • sold

Framing

Ok ... here is the White Castle 2 painting that sold in December. The woman who purchased it bought it for her husband ... a Whitle Castle afficionado and lover. Today I received this email with the frame that was chosen ... and now 'White Castle 2' has a presence in their dining room.

It's pretty remarkable how a frame can enhance - or detract from for that matter - a painting. I really am quite impressed with the frame that was chosen for White Castle 2. It's pretty much perfect for the painting. The size, color and feel is ideal.

Now, if you're interested in a painting that is not already sold ... and you visualize it in an incredible frame that suits the perfect space in your room, you just let me know ... it might just be the hundred dollar painting that looks like a million bucks.

Grandma's Phone

Grandma's Phone * this painting is sold

I must admit, although I appreciate today's technology, there's a soft spot in my heart for the earlier every day items that proudly took their place in our parents' and grand parents' homes. Although I do have several phones in my apartment - three working phones, one 'backup' phone, one cell phone - I have two very special phones as well. Grandma's rotary phones ... and both red. Grandma called them the 'direct line to the White House'. One red rotary phone stands ready in my kitchen, one sits quietly in my bathroom.

Maybe you have experienced how challenging life was with a rotary phone in a push button world ... but, now that I have my 'dial tone' phones, everything is a lot easier ... however, I still have my 'direct line to the White House' just in case ...

Radishes

Radishes • this painting is reserved

The radish (Raphanus sativus) is an edible root vegetable of the Brassicaceae family that is domesticated and consumed throughout the world. Although the radish is a well-established crop in Hellenistic and Roman times, which leads to the assumption that it was brought into cultivation at an earlier time, Zohary and Hopf note that "there are almost no archeological records available" to help determine its earlier history and domestication. Wild forms of the radish and its relatives the mustards and turnip can be found over west Asia and Europe, suggesting that their domestication took place somewhere in that area. However Zohary and Hopf conclude, "Suggestions as to the origins of these plants are necessarily based on linguistic considerations.

Radishes are a popular choice for personal cultivation, as they are fairly easy to grow. It is a rapidly-maturing crop, with many varieties able to reach maturity within 30 days.

Radishes grow best in full sun and moist, fertile, acidic to neutral soil. They are in season April, May, June, July, August, September, and part of October. Seeds will germinate if planted at a depth of 1 centimeter.

Red Apple

Red Apple

I just love poking my nose around the produce aisles. All the colors and textures ... the orange, yellows and greens of the apples and citrus fruits ... the purple and red and sage colors of the vegetables ... the complex design of the asparagus ... the textures and color variations of the nuts. There's a whole world of subjects to paint in the produce aisle.

But, one wonders what one is thinking as they're noticing a woman observing the distinctive lines of an apple .. the lengths of the stem ... the natural, yet desirable imperfections on the deep crimson skin. Once, when I was at the Farmers' Market examining a large red onion, I noticed the sales woman staring at me. 'They all taste the same' she barked ... 'are you going to buy it or not'?

Since then, when shopping, I try to keep my fruit and vegetable observations at an acceptable level. .... unless, of course, no one's watching.

Well, they're not REALLY manufactured in Paris (I don't believe) but the cloth DOES say 'ooh la-la de Paris' and the arms ARE decorated with fleur-de-lis... so who am I to question their origin?

Besides the fact that I just love them, I can see! I can read signs from blocks away. It's a whole new world out there when you're wearing corrective lenses.

Deb's Bells

Deb's Bells • this painting is sold

If you've ever been to my studio at the Banana Factory, you'll see that I keep some of my holiday decorations up all year. For instance, I have an old Christmas tree made out of latice and decorated with lights and ornaments. It lies flat and dresses up the corner of my studio. I have my 'Happy Valentine's Day' banner above my door and have strands of lights criss-crossing above with lit paper stars and lamps hanging from the ceiling.

Deb's the same way. She has lit snowballs and skeletons and icecicles and a collection of Peeps and plastic chickens that lay candy eggs. This decoration of bells and holly berries and pine cones hangs on her door.

Well, lately the weather has been cold and blustery. We're expecting a Noreaster this weekend. So, in honor of the upcoming April winter weather, I painted 'Deb's Bells' ... because it doesn't seem like Spring just yet.

Limburger Cheese

Limburger Cheese

When I was growing up, it happened often on a Saturday afternoon that the smell of Limburger Cheese would permeate the air. My Father would treat himself to Limburger Cheese sandwiches with red onion and brown mustard on pumpernickel bread. I would cringe with the odor.

Even as a young woman, I tried to stomach Limburger Cheese but just couldn't bring myself to eat even half of a sandwich.

Then I spent three summers in Germany. My friend Gundi likes Limburger Cheese paired with a strong beer. So I happened upon a beautiful little cheese shop in Schwaebisch Gmuend and there in the display case was a hunk of Limburger. The sales woman wrapped it in brown paper secured with twine and slipped a sprig of lavender through the bow. Lovely.

Gundi was pleased with her gift and that night we poured great German beer and set out a tray with Limburger. I must let you know that it was such a highlight for me. It was truly delicious. Now I keep Limburger in my own refrigerator ... and have surprised my friends with it. If you like a strong cheese ... trust me ... buy some cocktail pumpernickel bread, Téméraire mustard imported from the Dijon region of France ... a good strong beer(s) ... and a cake of Limburger cheese. It may surprise you, too!

Today's painting is my 200th painting in my Painting Each Day quest. It was lovingly painted in honor of my Father.

Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup

Heinz 57 Varieties Tomato Ketchup • this painting is sold

Heinz 57 is a shortened, popular form of the "57 Varieties" slogan of Pittsburgh's H. J. Heinz Company. In its early days, the company wanted to advertise the great number of choices of canned and bottled foods it offered for sale, although the number 57 was chosen arbitrarily, as in fact by 1892 they had more than 60 products. The company now has more than 1,100 products.

Although the company does not often use the slogan on its products today, the number 57 remains pervasive in its corporate culture and is known worldwide (although younger generations are markedly less familiar with it). In the United States and Britain, the number 57 is still printed on the packaging of various Heinz products.

The slogan is printed on Heinz pickle pins that are distributed by the millions.

I was strolling through the grocery store today ... I'm the one who always brings the 'Green Bean Casserole' for the holiday dinners, and there before me was a pyramid of beautiful green Granny Smith apples. Green like spring buds on a tree. Of course I placed one in my cart.

Russell Stover Chocolate Easter Bunny

Russell Stover Chocolate Easter Bunny

www.russellstover.com

from 'The Velveteen Rabbit'

"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become REAL."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Titleist Golf Ball

Titleist Golf Ball • this painting is sold

There was a 'sale' at Phoebe in Allentown and I purchased wonderful pool table balls and this golf ball. I'm not a golfer, but I can certainly appreciate the beauty of a golf ball. When we were kids, we used to peel the surface and scrape away the 'rubber band' coating .. and then play with the super ball within.

Titleist is a brand name owned by the Acushnet Company, headquartered in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Titleist produces golf equipment and is best known for its golf balls, but it also produces clubs and accessories.

Titleist's mottos are "The #1 ball in golf" and "Serious clubs for serious golfers."

First played in the U.S. Open in 1949, Titleist golf balls are still the top-selling and arguably best-known balls in the United States.

Pool Balls 2 and 14 for February 14th

Well, this one I did for me ... being that my birthday is February 14th. I just love looking at these old pool balls ... the colors are great ... and the 'white' of the ball is an old ivory colour.

If you would like to purchase this 6" x 6" oil painting on stretched canvas, please email me. This painting is priced at $100.00 plus s/h.
